Schisandra
Schisandra (wu wei zi — 'five-flavor berry') has been used in TCM for over 2,000 years. It is one of the 50 fundamental herbs of Chinese medicine, and the name 'five-flavor' reflects that it uniquely contains all five tastes recognized in TCM: sour, bitter, sweet, spicy, and salty. Siberian hunters would use schisandra berries to sustain their energy during long wilderness expeditions. Soviet scientists studied it extensively as a performance enhancer for athletes.
