The 4R protocol is the gold standard framework for restoring gut health: Remove, Replace, Reinoculate, Repair. Each stage has corresponding herbal and nutritional interventions.
Remove
Eliminate foods that inflame your gut: gluten (if sensitive), refined sugar, industrial seed oils, alcohol. Remove pathogens with antimicrobial herbs: oregano oil, berberine, or artemisia (under guidance). This stage typically lasts 2–4 weeks.
Replace
Restore digestive capacity with bitter herbs (dandelion, gentian) to stimulate stomach acid and bile production. Consider digestive enzymes if food sits heavily. Chew thoroughly — digestion begins in the mouth.
Reinoculate
Introduce probiotic-rich fermented foods: kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, yoghurt. Add prebiotic fibre (burdock, chicory, leek, onion). A high-quality probiotic with Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains can accelerate this phase.
Repair
Seal and heal the gut lining with: L-glutamine (5g daily), zinc carnosine, slippery elm, marshmallow root, colostrum. Bone broth provides glycine and collagen precursors that directly feed enterocytes. This phase takes 4–12 weeks depending on severity.
