How the Immune System Works

The immune system has two branches that work in concert: the innate immune system (fast, non-specific) and the adaptive immune system (slow, highly specific). Most herbal interventions target the innate system.

Innate Immunity

The first responders: neutrophils, macrophages, natural killer (NK) cells, and dendritic cells. They respond within minutes to hours, recognising pathogen-associated patterns (PAMPs) via toll-like receptors. Many herbs (Echinacea, medicinal mushrooms) specifically upregulate NK cell activity and macrophage phagocytosis.

Adaptive Immunity

T and B lymphocytes take 5โ€“7 days to mount a specific response but create immunological memory. Astragalus and elderberry have been shown to enhance B cell antibody production. Zinc is essential for T cell development โ€” deficiency impairs adaptive immunity disproportionately.

Avoiding Overstimulation

Stronger is not always better. An overactive immune response causes autoimmune conditions, chronic inflammation, and cytokine storms. Immune-modulating herbs (Reishi, Astragalus) are generally preferred over purely stimulating herbs (Echinacea) for long-term use.
