The Herbal Sleep Protocol

2 min read ยท 10 XP

A layered herbal approach addresses sleep from multiple angles simultaneously: circadian signalling, GABA modulation, cortisol reduction, and melatonin support.

Layer 1: Cortisol Reduction (Evening)

High evening cortisol is the most common cause of sleep onset difficulty. Ashwagandha (300mg) taken at 6pm blunts cortisol's evening spike. Phosphatidylserine (400mg) also powerfully reduces cortisol โ€” combine if stress is the primary driver.

Layer 2: GABA Upregulation (30 mins before bed)

Valerian (400mg) + Passionflower (250mg) โ€” this stack inhibits GABA breakdown via complementary enzymes. Add L-theanine (200mg) for anxiolytic effect without sedation. Lemon balm can substitute passionflower if unavailable.

Layer 3: Sleep Onset (bedtime)

Low-dose melatonin (0.3โ€“1mg, not the 10mg doses sold in the US which are 3โ€“10ร— physiological dose) taken with magnesium glycinate (400mg) supports sleep architecture without suppressing natural melatonin production. Glycine (3g) lowers core body temperature, accelerating sleep onset.

Morning Protocol

Bright light exposure within 30 minutes of waking sets your circadian anchor for the night. Morning exercise (not evening) raises adenosine pressure for the following night. Avoiding caffeine after 2pm allows adenosine to build properly by 10pm.

1. What is the physiological dose range for melatonin (not the high doses sold commercially)?

50mg

2. Glycine improves sleep onset primarily by:

Increasing GABA

Lowering core body temperature โœ“

Blocking cortisol

Stimulating melatonin

3. The Valerian + Passionflower stack works on:

Melatonin receptors

GABA breakdown via two different enzymes โœ“

Cortisol suppression

Adenosine receptors
