Pregnancy, Breastfeeding & Children
Pregnancy
AvoidPennyroyal is contraindicated in pregnancy — it has a well-documented history as an abortifacient, and its essential oil is seriously toxic (liver failure, death have been reported), even at doses close to those used for other purposes.
Breastfeeding
AvoidContraindicated during breastfeeding due to serious systemic toxicity risk.
Children
AvoidContraindicated in children — pennyroyal essential oil has caused fatal poisonings even in small amounts.
Interactions & contraindications
Always dilute in a carrier oil before topical use — never apply undiluted essential oil directly to skin. Some oils (citrus especially) increase sun sensitivity; avoid sun exposure on treated skin for 12+ hours. Do not ingest essential oils without guidance from a qualified practitioner.
Any use, especially in pregnancy
Essential oil is hepatotoxic and a known abortifacient — internal or concentrated use is not considered safe.
