How to use

  • Dilute in a carrier oil (2–3% dilution) before applying to skin.
  • Patch-test first.

Pregnancy, Breastfeeding & Children

Pregnancy

Avoid

Sassafras contains safrole, a compound classified as carcinogenic and hepatotoxic — contraindicated in pregnancy (and generally, given the FDA banned safrole-containing sassafras oil from food use in 1960).

Breastfeeding

Avoid

Contraindicated during breastfeeding due to safrole's documented toxicity.

Children

Avoid

Contraindicated in children due to safrole's documented carcinogenic/hepatotoxic profile.

Interactions & contraindications

Always dilute in a carrier oil before topical use — never apply undiluted essential oil directly to skin. Some oils (citrus especially) increase sun sensitivity; avoid sun exposure on treated skin for 12+ hours. Do not ingest essential oils without guidance from a qualified practitioner.

May thin the blood

Watch for: Anticoagulants (warfarin), antiplatelets (aspirin, clopidogrel), and other blood-thinning herbs or supplements (ginkgo, garlic, fish oil, vitamin E)

Combining blood-thinning substances can increase bleeding risk, including before surgery or dental work.
