Figwort (Genshen) (Scrophularia ningpoensis) is a herb used in the Kampo / Japanese Medicine tradition to help with Inflammation, Thyroid, Skin Health, and Fever. The aerial parts and leaves are the parts traditionally used, used both internally and topically.

Botanical background

Scrophularia ningpoensis, commonly known as the Ningpo figwort or Chinese figwort, is a perennial plant of the family Scrophulariaceae (the figwort family). It reaches 1 m by 0.4 m. Its flowers are hermaphrodite, insect-pollinated and the plant usually flowers in late spring.

Tea / Infusion

1–3 cups daily
  • Steep 1–2 tsp of dried Figwort (Genshen) in freshly boiled water for 5–10 minutes.
  • Cover while steeping.
  • Strain and drink.

20–40 drops in water, 2–3× daily
  • Pack dried Figwort (Genshen) into a jar and cover with 40–60% alcohol.
  • Seal and steep for 4–6 weeks, shaking daily.
  • Strain and store in a dark dropper bottle.

500 mg – 1 g, 1–3× daily
  • Grind dried Figwort (Genshen) into a fine powder.
