Lavender
The ancient Egyptians used lavender in mummification and perfume. The Romans used it to scent their baths, beds, and clothes — the name comes from the Latin 'lavare' meaning 'to wash.' During the Black Death, glove makers who scented their leather with lavender oil were said to be protected from the plague. Queen Elizabeth I reportedly demanded lavender jam at the royal table year-round.
