Saffron

The world's most expensive spice by weight, saffron has been used medicinally for over 3,500 years. Ancient Persians used it in royal baths and burial shrouds. Cleopatra reportedly used saffron-infused milk baths for its cosmetic benefits. Alexander the Great used saffron-infused baths to heal battle wounds. Ancient Greek and Roman physicians used it to treat coughs, colds, stomach disorders, and as a sleep aid.
