Valerian
Hippocrates described valerian's therapeutic properties, and Galen prescribed it for insomnia. During World War II, valerian was used in England to relieve stress from air raids. The name may derive from the Latin 'valere' meaning 'to be strong.' In medieval times it was considered a charm against evil and placed in homes for protection. It was so prized that peasants would use it as a deodorant.
