How to Make
🫧 Topicals
Creams, lotions, compresses, and other skin-applied preparations — for when a herb needs to work directly on the surface it's treating.
Video guide coming soon — for now, follow the written steps below.
Equipment needed
- Double boiler
- Kitchen scale
- Hand mixer or whisk (for creams and lotions)
- Sterilized glass jars or bottles
- Cheesecloth for straining infusions
- pH strips (optional, for lotions)
General method
- Prepare your herbal infusion or extract, oil-based or water-based depending on the recipe.
- Gently melt any oils, butters, or waxes together in a double boiler.
- For an emulsified cream or lotion, slowly combine the oil phase and water phase while whisking continuously until it thickens.
- Add any essential oils or heat-sensitive extracts once the mixture has cooled slightly.
- Pour into sterilized containers while still workable.
- Allow to fully set before sealing, and label with the date made.
- Patch-test on a small area of skin before regular use.
