Breathwork
Structured breathing patterns that directly shift the nervous system's state.
About this practice
Breathwork uses deliberate, structured breathing patterns — like slow diaphragmatic breathing or box breathing — to directly influence the autonomic nervous system. Slowing the exhale relative to the inhale activates the parasympathetic ('rest and digest') response almost immediately, making it one of the fastest tools available for in-the-moment stress relief.
How to do it
- Sit or lie down comfortably with one hand on your chest and one on your belly.
- Inhale slowly through the nose for a count of 4, feeling the belly (not chest) rise.
- Hold gently for a count of 4.
- Exhale slowly through the mouth or nose for a count of 6-8 — the longer exhale is what triggers the calming response.
- Repeat for 5-10 rounds, or longer if it feels good.

Cautions
- Fast/forceful breathing techniques (e.g. holotropic-style) can cause lightheadedness — avoid if pregnant or managing a cardiovascular or seizure condition without guidance.
