Grounding / Earthing

Direct skin contact with the earth's surface, believed to have calming effects.

20-30 minutes per session.
Daily if accessible, or a few times per week.

About this practice

Grounding (or earthing) is the practice of making direct physical contact with the ground — bare feet on grass, sand, or soil — for a period of time. Proponents and some preliminary research link it to reduced cortisol and inflammatory markers and improved mood, though the evidence base is still developing compared to more established practices on this list.

How to do it

  1. Find a natural outdoor surface — grass, sand, soil, or a natural body of water.
  2. Remove shoes and socks so skin makes direct contact with the ground.
  3. Stand, sit, or walk slowly, staying present to the physical sensation of contact.
  4. Combine it with slow breathing or a short period of quiet attention for added benefit.
  5. Check the ground for safety (temperature, sharp objects, allergens) before going barefoot.
