Digital Detox

Deliberate breaks from screens and notifications to reduce mental overstimulation.

1+ hours per session.
Daily (at minimum, the hour before bed); consider a full day weekly.

About this practice

Constant notifications and screen time are linked to elevated stress, disrupted sleep, and reduced attention span. A digital detox — a scheduled window with phones, computers, and TV set aside — gives the nervous system a genuine break from that steady stream of stimulation.

How to do it

  1. Pick a realistic window to start (an hour before bed is one of the highest-impact choices).
  2. Turn off notifications, or better, move the device to another room entirely.
  3. Replace the freed-up time with something screen-free — reading, a walk, conversation, or simply resting.
  4. Extend the window gradually if it feels sustainable (a full evening, a weekend day).
  5. Notice how sleep, mood, or focus change on days you keep the detox versus days you don't.
