Reflexology
Targeted pressure on the feet, hands, or ears believed to correspond to organs.
20-40 minutes per session.
Weekly, or as a relaxing occasional practice.
About this practice
Reflexology applies focused pressure to specific points on the feet, hands, or ears, based on the concept that these points correspond to organs and systems elsewhere in the body. Many people find it deeply relaxing regardless of the underlying mechanism, and it's a gentle, non-invasive addition to a stress-reduction routine.
How to do it
- Find a trained reflexologist, or learn basic self-technique for the feet from a reputable guide.
- Sit comfortably with feet accessible, ideally after a warm foot soak to relax the muscles.
- Apply firm, steady thumb pressure to different zones of the sole, working systematically from toes to heel.
- Notice any particularly tender points — reflexology theory associates these with corresponding body areas — and spend extra time there.
- Finish with a few minutes of gentle overall foot massage.
