Walking

The simplest, most accessible form of daily movement.

20-45 minutes per session.
Daily, or at minimum 5x per week (150+ min/week total is a well-supported target).

About this practice

Regular brisk walking is one of the most consistently evidence-backed lifestyle interventions available — supporting cardiovascular health, mood, blood sugar regulation, and healthy weight, with essentially no equipment, cost, or skill barrier to entry.

How to do it

  1. Aim for a pace where you can still hold a conversation but feel your breathing pick up.
  2. Start with whatever duration is comfortable (even 10 minutes counts) and build up gradually.
  3. Walk outdoors when possible — natural light and fresh air add extra mood benefits.
  4. Use a phone app or watch to track steps/distance if that helps with motivation.
  5. Break it into 2-3 shorter walks through the day if one long walk doesn't fit your schedule.
