Yin Yoga

Slow, floor-based poses held for minutes at a time to release deep connective tissue.

30-45 minutes per session.
2-4x per week, especially in the evening.

About this practice

Yin yoga targets the connective tissue (fascia, ligaments) rather than muscle, using long-held, passive floor poses to encourage deep relaxation and improve joint mobility over time. Its slow pace makes it especially well suited as an evening wind-down practice.

How to do it

  1. Pick 3-5 seated or lying poses (e.g. butterfly, dragon, sphinx) that target areas of tension.
  2. Ease into each pose only to a gentle stretch — yin poses should feel like a 'sweet ache', never sharp.
  3. Hold each pose for 3-5 minutes, breathing slowly and letting muscles fully relax into it.
  4. Use props (pillows, blocks, blankets) generously to support the body so it can stay passive.
  5. Come out of each pose slowly and pause briefly before moving to the next.

Cautions

  • Avoid deep holds on any joint with hypermobility or a recent injury.
  • Not a substitute for cardiovascular exercise on its own.
