Tea Tree Oil (10% topical)
Melaleuca alternifolia
Clinical trials demonstrate tea tree oil 10% equivalent to clotrimazole 1% for tinea resolution. Effective against Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton dermatophytes.
Preparation:
- Dilute to 10% in coconut oil (1 part tea tree to 9 parts coconut oil — coconut has additional antifungal lauric acid).
- Apply to lesion and 1 cm beyond the edge.
- Apply 2× daily.
Dosage:
- Apply 2× daily.
- Continue for 2 weeks AFTER the lesion appears cleared — dermatophytes persist in stratum corneum after visual clearance.
Avoid if:
- 10% for 3y+; 5% for under 3y
- Not near eyes
- Never ingest
Neem Oil (topical)

- For scalp: apply as hair oil, leave 1–2 hours, wash off.

Avoid if:
- Strong smell — dilute well
- Not for internal use
Garlic (topical and internal)
Allium sativum
Ajoene from garlic was found equivalent to terbinafine in one clinical trial for tinea pedis. Topical and dietary garlic provides dual antifungal pressure.
Preparation:
- Topical: crush 1–2 garlic cloves, mix with coconut oil (1:2), apply to lesion.
- Wash off after 20–30 minutes.
- Internal: 2–4 cloves in daily cooking.
Dosage:
- Topical: 20–30 min application 1× daily (patch test first).
- Internal: 2–4 cloves in cooking daily.
