Valerian has additive sedative effects with alcohol, benzodiazepines, sleep medications, and other CNS depressants. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery when combining.
Valerian & Lemon Balm
Valeriana officinalis / Melissa officinalis
The most evidence-supported herbal combination for childhood sleep difficulties β multiple trials including a 2014 study show combined valerian + lemon balm significantly reduces sleep onset time and night waking in children aged 3β11.
Preparation:
- Commercial glycerite blend (alcohol-free) or tea at bedtime.
- Most effective 30β45 min before the expected sleep time.
Dosage:
- Children (3β8y): 1β2 ml glycerite at bedtime.
- Children (9β12y): 2β3 ml at bedtime.
- Teens: 3β5 ml or 300 mg extract at bedtime.
Avoid if:
- Only at bedtime
- Not for under 3 years
Lavender (aroma and oral)
Lavandula angustifolia
Both topical aromatic exposure and oral lavender (teens) have clinical evidence for improved sleep quality in children β lavender's linalool acts on the same pathway as benzodiazepines but without dependence risk.
Preparation:
- Diffuser: 3β4 drops lavender EO in an ultrasonic diffuser in child's room, running from 30 min before bedtime to sleep.
- Pillow spray: dilute 5 drops in 100 ml water, spray on pillow.
- Oral (teens only): Silexan 80 mg (proprietary lavender oil capsule).
Dosage:
- Aroma: diffuser 30 min before sleep nightly.
- Oral (teens): Silexan 80 mg at bedtime.
Avoid if:
- Oral lavender oil: teens only
- Aroma diffusion: safe for all ages when well-ventilated
Passionflower & Chamomile
Passiflora incarnata / Matricaria chamomilla
For children whose sleep difficulty is driven by anxiety and inability to switch off racing thoughts at night β passionflower and chamomile address the anxious component of paediatric insomnia.
Preparation:
- Glycerite or bedtime tea.
- Serve 30β45 min before bed as part of a consistent calming routine.
Dosage:
- Children (3β12y): 1β2 ml combined glycerite at bedtime.
- Teens: 2β3 ml glycerite or 240 ml bedtime tea.
Avoid if:
- Not for under 3 years
- Only at bedtime
Blue Lotus (Seshen)
Nymphaea caerulea
Traditionally used in Ancient Egyptian Medicine for anxiety, sleep, libido.
Preparation:
- Infusion or powder: Steep as a tea, or grind and fill into size-00 capsules.
- Can also be added to smoothies or warm water.
Dosage:
- 1β3 cups daily, or 500 mgβ1 g as powder/capsule
