Slippery Elm Bark
Ulmus rubra
The gentlest and most effective bowel-normalising herb for children — slippery elm's mucilage adds bulk and lubrication to the stool without stimulant laxative effects, making it safe for daily use in children.
Preparation:
- Mix ½–1 tsp powder in warm water, apple juice, or applesauce.
- Stir well and consume immediately before it gels fully.
- Can be mixed into porridge or yoghurt.
Dosage:
- Children (1–3y): ½ tsp in food or drink, once daily.
- Children (4–12y): 1 tsp, 1–2× daily.
- Teens: 1–2 tsp, 2× daily.
- Drink extra water after each dose.
Avoid if:
- Must always be taken with adequate water
- May slow absorption of medications — take 2 hours apart
Dandelion Root
Taraxacum officinale
Bitter liver and digestive tonic that stimulates bile production and improves peristalsis — gentle enough for children when properly dosed. Addresses the liver-gut sluggishness common in children with chronic constipation.
Preparation:
- Roasted dandelion root tea (tastes like mild coffee — well-tolerated by children with honey).
- Decoct 1 tsp roasted root in 300 ml water for 10 min.
- Strain.
Dosage:
- Children (3–6y): 60–90 ml, once daily.
- Children (7–12y): 120 ml, 1–2× daily.
- Teens: 240 ml, 2× daily.
Avoid if:
- Avoid if gallstones present
- Not for under 3 years — bitter stimulation can cause cramping in young children
Marshmallow Root
Althaea officinalis
Soothing demulcent herb that lubricates the entire intestinal tract and reduces the fear and discomfort of defecation that drives withholding in toddlers and young children.
Preparation:
- Cold infusion (do not boil — heat destroys mucilage): soak 1 tbsp root in 500 ml cold water for 4–8 hours.
- Strain.
- Serve room temperature or lightly warmed.
Dosage:
- Children (1–5y): 60–100 ml cold infusion, 2× daily.
