Ginger Root
Zingiber officinale
The most evidence-based herb for nausea and vomiting in children β multiple RCTs confirm ginger's effectiveness for gastroenteritis-related nausea and vomiting in children over 2 years.
Preparation:
- Very dilute ginger tea: grate ΒΌ tsp fresh ginger, simmer in 300 ml water for 8 min, strain thoroughly, cool to warm.
- Add honey for palatability (1y+).
- For frozen ginger ice cubes: freeze dilute ginger tea β sucking on ice cubes reduces vomiting.
Dosage:
- Children (2β5y): 30β60 ml dilute warm ginger tea, every 30β60 min during nausea.
- Children (6β12y): 60β120 ml, every 1β2 hours.
- Teens: 120β240 ml.
Avoid if:
- Dilute well for young children
- Not for infants under 2 years without medical guidance
Chamomile
Matricaria chamomilla
Anti-spasmodic herb for the cramping, diarrhoea, and gut distress of childhood gastroenteritis β reduces intestinal spasm without suppressing the immune response fighting the infection.
Preparation:
- Steep 1 tsp chamomile in 300 ml boiled water for 5β8 min, covered.
- Strain.
- Cool to warm.
- Serve in small sips between oral rehydration doses.
Dosage:
- Children (1β12y): 30β60 ml every 1β2 hours between ORS sips.
- Teens: 120β180 ml, 3β4Γ daily.
Avoid if:
- Avoid in Asteraceae allergy
- Do not use instead of oral rehydration solution β chamomile is adjunct support
Slippery Elm
Ulmus rubra
Demulcent herb that coats and soothes the inflamed intestinal mucosa of gastroenteritis, reducing diarrhoea without blocking the immune expulsion response.
Preparation:
- Β½ tsp powder stirred into a little water to form a gel.
- Add to ORS or diluted apple juice.
- Serve slowly.
Dosage:
- Children (2β12y): Β½ tsp in small amount of water or juice, 3Γ daily between meals and ORS sessions.
- Teens: 1 tsp, 3Γ daily.
Avoid if:
- Take separately from ORS β do not mix as it may alter electrolyte absorption
