Ginger Root

Zingiber officinale

The most evidence-supported natural remedy for motion sickness in children and adults — multiple RCTs confirm ginger is equivalent to scopolamine for prevention of motion sickness nausea.

Preparation:

  • Ginger chews or crystallised ginger for older children (4y+).
  • Ginger tea before travel.
  • Fresh ginger slices kept for chewing during travel.
  • Ginger glycerite drops for younger children.

Dosage:

  • Children (2–5y): 5–10 drops ginger glycerite in water, 30 min before travel, repeat every 4 hours.
  • Children (6–12y): 500 mg ginger extract or 2 crystallised ginger pieces before travel.
  • Teens: 1 g ginger extract.

Avoid if:

  • Not combined with blood thinners at therapeutic doses
  • Crystallised ginger for 4y+ only (choking and sugar)
  • For very young children: use very dilute ginger tea or glycerite only

Ayurveda / TCM / Western Herbalism

Peppermint (aroma and tea)

Mentha piperita

Peppermint aroma (diffused or cotton ball) and peppermint tea reduce nausea and provide rapid relief during motion sickness.

Preparation:

  • Aroma: 1–2 drops peppermint EO on a handkerchief or cotton ball, held near (not under) the nose during travel.
  • Tea (5y+ only): dilute peppermint tea sipped slowly.
  • NEVER apply peppermint EO near the face of children under 5 — menthol can cause respiratory distress.

Dosage:

  • Aroma: as needed during travel, keep away from direct nostril inhalation for young children.
  • Tea (5y+): 60–90 ml dilute, sipped as needed.

Avoid if:

  • NEVER apply peppermint EO directly to or near face of children under 5 — can cause respiratory distress
  • Internal peppermint tea for 5y+ only

Western Herbalism / Mediterranean

Crystallised Ginger or Ginger Chews

Most practical and child-acceptable form of ginger for motion sickness — chewing activates salivary lingual lipase which enhances the gut absorption of gingerols.

Preparation:

  • Give 2–3 pieces of crystallised ginger or ginger chews 30 min before travel.
  • Keep extra for during the journey.

Dosage:

  • Children (4y+): 2–3 pieces before travel, 1–2 pieces every 2 hours during travel if needed.
  • Not for under 4 — choking risk and sugar content.

Ayurveda / Modern

Dry Crackers or Plain Biscuits (en route)

Starchy, bland food during travel keeps blood sugar stable and reduces gastric acid secretion — acidic empty stomach worsens motion sickness.

Preparation:

  • Offer plain, dry crackers or rice cakes every 1–2 hours during long journeys.

Dosage:

  • Small amounts every 1–2 hours.
  • Avoid heavy, fatty, acidic, or spicy food before travel.

Universal

Motion Sickness Prevention Protocol

Ayurvedic / Western Integrative

  • Motion sickness affects 58% of children aged 7–12 years and typically improves with age.
  • The natural protocol focuses on pre-loading ginger's anti-nausea mechanism before travel, maintaining stable blood sugar during travel, and using aromatic anti-nausea support during the journey.

Foods:

  • Night before travel: light easily-digested meal — no fatty, spicy or heavy foods
  • Morning of travel: bland breakfast — oatmeal or plain toast only, no orange juice or acidic foods
  • 30 min before departure: ginger tea + crystallised ginger chews
  • During travel: dry crackers or rice cakes every 1–2 hours
  • During travel: peppermint handkerchief (5y+) for nausea episodes
  • During travel: ginger chews as needed
  • Travel position: always face-forward seat, look at the horizon, limit reading and screens

Timing:

  • Pre-travel morning: Plain oatmeal with banana + 120 ml diluted apple-ginger juice — bland stable fuel, ginger pre-loaded
  • 30 min before departure: 2–3 ginger chews + sip of ginger-lemon balm tea in a thermos for the journey
  • During journey (every 2 hours): Plain crackers + 1 ginger chew + peppermint cloth near nose if nausea begins — layered anti-nausea management
