Sore Throat

Marshmallow, sage gargle & propolis spray for pharyngitis

moderateImmune & Infections2+ years

Safety notice β€” HIGH

Sunaras provides educational wellness content only. This is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Individual responses to herbs vary. Always consult a qualified healthcare practitioner for personalised guidance.

Echinacea stimulates the immune system and may counteract immunosuppressant medications used after organ transplants or for autoimmune conditions (corticosteroids, cyclosporine, methotrexate). Not recommended for autoimmune diseases without specialist supervision.

Licorice root causes sodium retention and potassium depletion, raising blood pressure. Avoid with antihypertensives, diuretics (potassium depletion risk), or digoxin. Daily use exceeding 5g for more than 4 weeks carries significant cardiovascular risk.

Marshmallow Root

Althaea officinalis

Demulcent herb that coats the throat mucosa with a thick mucilaginous layer β€” soothes pain immediately and protects raw tissue from further irritation. One of the safest herbs for children.

Preparation:

  • Cold infusion (preserves mucilage better than hot): 1 tbsp marshmallow root in 500 ml cold water overnight.
  • Strain well.
  • Warm slightly to body temperature.
  • Can add honey (1y+).

Dosage:

  • Children (1–5y): 60 ml every 2–3 hours.
  • Children (6–12y): 120 ml every 2–3 hours.
  • Teens: 240 ml every 2–3 hours.
  • Can gargle first then swallow.

Avoid if:

  • Take 2 hours apart from medications β€” mucilage impairs oral drug absorption

Sage Leaf

Salvia officinalis

Potent antimicrobial and astringent gargle herb β€” clinical trial showed sage throat spray equivalent to chlorhexidine for reducing throat pain in 3 hours. Kills Streptococcus directly.

Preparation:

  • Gargle only (do not swallow large amounts for children under 8): steep 2 tsp dried sage in 250 ml boiling water, covered for 10 min, strain.
  • Cool to warm.
  • Children 8+: gargle 30 seconds, spit.
  • Can swallow small amounts as a tea with honey.

Dosage:

  • Gargle 3–4Γ— daily.
  • Children under 8: use as a throat compress or wrap only β€” do not gargle (risk of aspiration).
  • Teens and adults: gargle and swallow.

Avoid if:

  • Not for prolonged internal use in children under 8 β€” thujone content
  • Gargle only for children under 12

Mediterranean / Western Herbalism

Echinacea (purpurea)

Echinacea purpurea

Immune-activating herb that accelerates resolution of sore throat β€” most effective when started at the very first sign of throat pain. Reduces duration by 1–2 days when started early.

Preparation:

  • Glycerite for children under 12.
  • Dissolve drops in a small amount of water or juice.
  • For older children: liquid extract or capsules.

Dosage:

  • Children (2–6y): 1 ml glycerite 3Γ— daily.
  • Children (7–12y): 2 ml glycerite 3Γ— daily.
  • Teens: 300–500 mg capsule 3Γ— daily.
  • Use for 10 days maximum.

Avoid if:

  • Not for under 2 years
  • Not for autoimmune conditions
  • 10-day maximum courses

Native American / Eclectic Medicine

Licorice Root

Glycyrrhiza glabra

Antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and demulcent β€” licorice is one of the most used herbs in all traditional medicine systems for sore throat. Glycyrrhizin inhibits multiple respiratory viruses.

Preparation:

  • Simmer 1 tsp dried licorice root in 300 ml water for 10 min.
  • Strain.
  • Cool to warm.
  • Naturally very sweet β€” children usually accept it well.
  • Add peppermint or ginger if desired.

Dosage:

  • Children (3–6y): 30–60 ml twice daily.
  • Children (7–12y): 60–120 ml 3Γ— daily.
  • Teens: 240 ml 3Γ— daily.
  • Use for maximum 2 weeks continuously.

Avoid if:

  • Not for children with hypertension or oedema
  • Maximum 2 weeks use β€” glycyrrhizin raises blood pressure with prolonged use
  • Not for children with hypokalaemia
