Chamomile (topical & tea)

Matricaria chamomilla

The most universally used herb for teething across European and North American folk traditions β€” chamomilla is also the most prescribed homeopathic remedy for teething. Topical application to the gums provides direct anti-inflammatory and mild analgesic relief.

Preparation:

  • Cooled chamomile tea compress: brew strong chamomile tea (2 tsp in 250 ml), cool completely, freeze in ice cube tray.
  • Wrap a frozen chamomile cube in a thin clean cloth and let infant gnaw on it.
  • For tea: dilute cooled chamomile tea and offer in a dropper or sippy cup.

Dosage:

  • Topical frozen compress: as needed for active teething distress.
  • Dilute tea for infants (4m+): 5–10 ml cooled dilute tea, up to 3Γ— daily.

Avoid if:

  • Avoid in Asteraceae allergy
  • Never give frozen chamomile directly β€” always wrapped to prevent choking hazard

European Folk Medicine / Homeopathic

Clove (topical only β€” very diluted)

Syzygium aromaticum

Clove oil contains eugenol β€” a potent local anaesthetic used in dentistry. In extremely diluted form, it provides teething pain relief. MUST BE DILUTED β€” undiluted clove oil is toxic to infants.

Preparation:

  • Dilute 1 drop clove essential oil in 30 ml coconut oil or olive oil (very heavily diluted).
  • Apply a tiny amount to the gum with a cotton swab β€” rub gently.
  • NEVER apply undiluted.
  • NEVER use clove oil for infants under 4 months.

Dosage:

  • Apply tiny amount on cotton swab to gum, maximum 2Γ— daily.
  • 1 drop EO in 30 ml carrier oil β€” this is the maximum concentration safe for infants.

Avoid if:

  • Must be HEAVILY diluted β€” undiluted clove oil causes oral mucosal damage in infants
  • Not for under 4 months
  • Do not use on broken or bleeding gum tissue

Marshmallow Root (gum massage)

Althaea officinalis

A whole dried marshmallow root stick is a traditional European teething remedy β€” the infant gnaws on the root, releasing soothing mucilage that coats the inflamed gum, while the root itself provides a satisfying chewing surface.

Preparation:

  • Source whole dried marshmallow root sticks (cleaned, food-grade).
  • Offer under direct parental supervision only.
  • The fibrous root is safe to gnaw but should not be swallowed.
  • Refrigerate for added cooling relief.

Dosage:

  • Supervised gnawing sessions of 5–10 minutes.
  • Replace root daily.

Avoid if:

  • Supervision required at all times β€” never leave infant unattended with root
  • Source only food-grade dried roots

Preparation:

  • Peel and cut banana into finger-length pieces.
  • Freeze on baking sheet.
  • Offer in a mesh feeder bag (prevents choking) for younger infants.
  • Older infants can hold a large frozen banana piece.

Dosage:

  • As needed during teething.
  • 1–2 pieces per session.

Universal Folk

Chilled Cucumber Stick

Cold cucumber provides teething counter-pressure and has natural anti-inflammatory properties β€” a traditional European first-food teething remedy.

Preparation:

  • Refrigerate (not freeze) a thick cucumber stick.
  • Offer with supervision.
  • Remove skin for young infants to reduce choking risk.
  • Wipe away after use.

Dosage:

  • As needed.
  • Offer 5–10 min sessions under supervision.
