Cat Upper Respiratory Infection
Elderberry, L-lysine & echinacea to suppress feline herpesvirus and calicivirus
Safety notice β HIGH
Sunaras provides educational wellness content only. This is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Individual responses to herbs vary. Always consult a qualified healthcare practitioner for personalised guidance.
Echinacea stimulates the immune system and may counteract immunosuppressant medications used after organ transplants or for autoimmune conditions (corticosteroids, cyclosporine, methotrexate). Not recommended for autoimmune diseases without specialist supervision.
High-dose garlic supplements inhibit platelet aggregation and thin the blood. Use with caution alongside warfarin, aspirin, or other antiplatelet/anticoagulant drugs. Discontinue 7 days before surgery.
L-Lysine (amino acid supplement)
L-lysine is the most widely studied nutritional intervention for feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1). Lysine competes with arginine for intestinal absorption and intracellular transport; since FHV-1 requires arginine for viral replication, high lysine intake reduces the arginine availability needed for viral protein synthesis. Multiple veterinary studies show lysine supplementation reduces the severity and duration of FHV-1 recurrences and reduces viral shedding in carrier cats.
β οΈ Safe for long-term use in cats at these doses. Use a cat-specific product β do not use human L-lysine products that may contain xylitol or other cat-toxic fillers. The efficacy in cats has been questioned in some meta-analyses, but safety is well established and clinical experience is positive.
Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) β feline-safe preparation
Elderberry anthocyanins and flavonoids inhibit viral surface protein function, preventing feline herpesvirus-1 and feline calicivirus attachment to respiratory epithelial cells. Elderberry also stimulates innate immune interferon production, strengthening the initial anti-viral barrier in the nasal and pharyngeal mucosa. Cats can tolerate properly prepared elderberry in very small, diluted amounts β but must not receive raw elderberries or concentrated preparations intended for dogs or humans.
β οΈ Cats are significantly more sensitive than dogs β use the minimum effective dose. Never use raw elderberries or elderberry essential oil. Never use preparations containing xylitol, grape, or artificial sweeteners. Monitor for vomiting, lethargy, or diarrhoea. If any adverse signs occur, discontinue immediately.
Slippery Elm Bark (Ulmus rubra)
Slippery elm's mucilaginous polysaccharides soothe irritated mucosal surfaces throughout the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract. In feline URI, slippery elm helps manage the secondary gastrointestinal signs (reduced appetite, nausea) that accompany nasal congestion β cats rely on scent to stimulate appetite, and when congested they stop eating. Slippery elm is one of the safest herbs for cats and supports gut health during the anorexia and medication side effects of URI treatment.
β οΈ Safe for cats. May slow absorption of medications if given simultaneously β space 2 hours away from any prescribed medications. Do not use with dry food only β cats with URI need wet food for moisture.
