Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon)
Cranberry proanthocyanidins (PACs) — particularly A-type PACs — prevent Escherichia coli from adhering to the canine urothelium, blocking the initial colonisation step of UTI. This anti-adhesion mechanism does not kill bacteria but prevents them from establishing infection, making cranberry a useful preventive and adjunct in canine UTI.
⚠️ Use pure unsweetened cranberry only — cranberry juice cocktails contain xylitol or high sugar. Cranberry is supportive — bacterial UTI in dogs requires veterinary diagnosis and antibiotic treatment. Cranberry supports post-antibiotic prevention.
Corn Silk (Urinary Tract Soother)
Corn silk flavonoids (maysin, chrysoeriol) soothe the inflamed urothelium during UTI, reducing the dysuria (painful urination) and frequency of urination associated with urinary tract infection. Supports the comfort of the dog while antibiotic treatment addresses the bacterial infection.
⚠️ Corn silk is symptom-supportive, not antibacterial. UTI confirmed by urinalysis/culture requires appropriate antibiotic treatment — corn silk supports comfort during treatment and recovery.
Marshmallow Root (Urinary Mucosal Soothing)
Marshmallow root polysaccharides coat the inflamed urothelium in UTI, providing a protective film that reduces the pain and burning sensation associated with bacterial cystitis. Supports post-antibiotic mucosal healing.
⚠️ Space 2 hours from antibiotic medications (mucilage can reduce antibiotic absorption). Cold infusion only.
