Nettle Leaf
Urtica dioica
The most iron-rich herb available — dried nettle contains 41 mg iron per 100g (vs beef's 3 mg) in a highly bioavailable form. The world's most used food plant for iron deficiency anaemia across traditional medicine systems.
Preparation:
- Nettle infusion (long infusion extracts minerals best): 1–2 tbsp dried nettle in 500 ml boiled water.
- Steep covered for 20–30 min (or up to 4 hours for maximum mineral extraction).
- Strain.
- Drink warm or cold.
- Naturally salty-savoury taste — most children accept with honey.
Dosage:
- Children (4–8y): 120 ml twice daily.
- Children (9–12y): 240 ml twice daily.
- Teens: 500 ml daily split in 2–3 doses.
- Most effective when taken consistently for 3+ months.
Avoid if:
- Use dried or cooked nettle only — fresh raw nettle stings (obvious but stated)
- Not for children with haemochromatosis or haemolytic anaemia
Yellow Dock Root
Rumex crispus
High iron content herb that also stimulates stomach acid production for enhanced iron absorption. Traditional 'blood builder' used specifically for iron deficiency anaemia for centuries.
Preparation:
- Decoction: simmer 1 tsp dried yellow dock root in 300 ml water for 15 min.
- Strain.
- Add honey or blackstrap molasses (itself iron-rich).
- Take 30 min before meals for best absorption.
Dosage:
- Children (6–12y): 60–90 ml decoction twice daily.
- Teens: 120–180 ml twice daily.
- Continue for 3 months.
Avoid if:
- Contains oxalates — avoid in kidney stones or high oxalate diet
- Laxative effect in high doses — use as a mild tonic not a laxative
Blackstrap Molasses
Saccharum officinarum (concentrated)
The most concentrated food source of iron after organ meats — 1 tablespoon of blackstrap molasses contains 3.5 mg iron plus calcium, magnesium, B6, and potassium. More bioavailable than most iron supplements and far better tolerated.
Preparation:
- Mix 1 tbsp blackstrap molasses in warm water or milk.
- Or stir into oatmeal.
- Take with vitamin C food or drink to maximise iron absorption.
Dosage:
- Children (2–12y): 1 tsp daily in warm water with lemon.
- Teens: 1 tbsp daily.
- Continue for 3+ months.
Avoid if:
- High sugar content — not appropriate for diabetics
- Ensure blackstrap (not regular) molasses — nutritional content varies enormously
