Condition

Lung Cancer Support

Cancer support describes complementary approaches used alongside conventional oncology care to help manage treatment side effects, support immune function, and improve quality of life during and after treatment — it is not a substitute for oncological treatment but an adjunct to it. Cancer treatment and the disease process itself place substantial demands on the body: chemotherapy and radiation generate oxidative stress and can suppress bone marrow function, appetite and digestion are frequently disrupted, and chronic inflammation is both a feature of malignancy and a target of ongoing research into cancer progression. Holistic support during this period focuses on nutritional resilience and gentle immune and inflammatory modulation rather than aggressive intervention. Holistic support: adequate protein intake to preserve muscle mass and support tissue repair; ginger for chemotherapy-related nausea; medicinal mushrooms such as turkey tail and reishi, studied for their beta-glucan content and immune-modulating polysaccharides; green tea's EGCG and turmeric's curcumin, both researched for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity; and gentle movement, shown across many studies to reduce treatment-related fatigue and support overall wellbeing.

Safety notice — CRITICAL

This is a serious medical condition that requires diagnosis and ongoing management by a qualified physician or specialist. Herbal protocols may complement — but cannot replace — professional medical treatment. Always discuss any herbal use with your treating doctor.

Sunaras provides educational wellness content only. This is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Individual responses to herbs vary. Always consult a qualified healthcare practitioner for personalised guidance.

Licorice root causes sodium retention and potassium depletion, raising blood pressure. Avoid with antihypertensives, diuretics (potassium depletion risk), or digoxin. Daily use exceeding 5g for more than 4 weeks carries significant cardiovascular risk.

High-dose curcumin (above 1g/day) has antiplatelet properties. Use with caution alongside blood thinners. Also lowers blood sugar — monitor closely if on diabetes medications.

Ginseng may lower blood sugar (caution with insulin or diabetes medications), interact with MAOIs potentially causing manic episodes, and alter warfarin efficacy. Avoid in oestrogen-sensitive cancers.

Astragalus Root

Astragalus membranaceus

Astragalus is the most clinically evidenced herb for lung cancer support. A systematic review of 34 randomised controlled trials (n=2,815) in China found that astragalus combined with chemotherapy significantly improved 1-year and 2-year survival, tumour response rate, and quality of life in NSCLC patients.

Preparation:

  • Decoction: simmer 15–30g dried root in 4 cups water for 45 min.
  • Drink 2 cups daily.
  • Or standardised extract equivalent.

Dosage:

  • 9–30g daily decoction or 3–6g standardised extract

Avoid if:

  • Always consult your oncologist before adding any herb or supplement during cancer treatment — some may interact with chemotherapy, targeted therapies, or radiation.
  • Avoid with active autoimmune conditions

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Reishi Mushroom

Ganoderma lucidum

Reishi is used in integrative lung cancer protocols in both China and Western integrative oncology centres. Beta-glucans support immune surveillance while triterpenes reduce lung cancer cell migration and invasion.

Preparation:

  • Simmer 5g dried slices in 1L water 45 min.
  • Drink 2 cups daily.
  • Or dual-extracted capsules 1–1.5g.

Dosage:

  • 1.5–9g dried daily or 1–1.5g dual extract

Avoid if:

  • Always consult your oncologist before adding any herb or supplement during cancer treatment — some may interact with chemotherapy, targeted therapies, or radiation.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Cordyceps Mushroom

Cordyceps sinensis / Cordyceps militaris

Valued in Tibetan and TCM medicine for lung and respiratory conditions. Cordycepin and polysaccharides support lung function, immune activity, and reduce cancer-related fatigue — particularly useful for the breathlessness and exhaustion experienced in lung cancer.

Preparation:

  • Standardised Cordyceps militaris extract (CS-4 or fruiting body extract): 1–3g daily.
  • Can be taken as capsules or added to hot water as a tonic.

Dosage:

  • 1–3g standardised extract daily

Avoid if:

  • Always consult your oncologist before adding any herb or supplement during cancer treatment — some may interact with chemotherapy, targeted therapies, or radiation.
  • Avoid low-quality Cordyceps sinensis caterpillar fungus — use cultivated C. militaris

Tibetan Medicine / Traditional Chinese Medicine

Turmeric (Curcumin)

Curcuma longa

Curcumin reduces NSCLC cell proliferation and sensitises lung cancer cells to cisplatin-induced apoptosis. Reduces cisplatin-induced oxidative nephrotoxicity as a protective adjunct. Anti-inflammatory action in the lung microenvironment.

Preparation:

  • Liposomal curcumin or phospholipid complex (phytosome) for best lung tissue delivery.
  • Or golden milk daily with black pepper.

Dosage:

  • 400–600mg liposomal curcumin with meals or 1–2 tsp turmeric daily in cooking

Avoid if:

  • Always consult your oncologist before adding any herb or supplement during cancer treatment — some may interact with chemotherapy, targeted therapies, or radiation.
  • High-dose curcumin may affect CYP3A4 — discuss with oncologist if on erlotinib, gefitinib, or other TKIs

Ayurveda

Thyme Herb

Thymus vulgaris

Thyme is a powerful respiratory herb with expectorant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties that support the lung tissue directly. Thymoquinone has demonstrated anti-proliferative activity against lung cancer cell lines.

Preparation:

  • Thyme steam inhalation: add fresh thyme to a bowl of hot water, inhale for 10 min.
  • Thyme tea: 2 tsp fresh or 1 tsp dried per cup, steep 10 min covered.

Dosage:

  • 3–4 cups thyme tea daily; or steam inhalation 1–2× daily

Avoid if:

  • Always consult your oncologist before adding any herb or supplement during cancer treatment — some may interact with chemotherapy, targeted therapies, or radiation.
  • Avoid concentrated essential oil internally

Mediterranean / Western Herbalism

Licorice Root

Glycyrrhiza glabra

Used in TCM as a 'harmonising herb' in lung formulas, licorice root soothes inflamed bronchial mucosa, reduces radiation-induced mucositis, and glycyrrhizin has demonstrated anti-tumour activity in lung cancer models.

Preparation:

  • Decoction: simmer 3–9g dried root in 2 cups water for 20 min.
  • Drink 1 cup 2× daily.
  • Or deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) lozenges for mucositis without blood pressure effects.

Dosage:

  • 3–9g decoction daily or DGL 380mg lozenges as needed for mucositis

Avoid if:

  • Always consult your oncologist before adding any herb or supplement during cancer treatment — some may interact with chemotherapy, targeted therapies, or radiation.
  • Avoid whole licorice with hypertension, kidney disease, or oedema — use DGL form
  • Avoid prolonged high-dose use

Traditional Chinese Medicine / Unani Medicine

Ginseng Root

Panax ginseng

Korean and Chinese ginseng is an adaptogen widely used in integrative lung cancer protocols — particularly for managing cancer-related fatigue, improving quality of life, and immune support during chemotherapy. Multiple RCTs support its role in reducing cancer fatigue.

Preparation:

  • Korean red ginseng: 1–2g extract or 3–9g decoction daily.
  • Take in the morning to avoid sleep disruption from stimulating ginsenosides.

Dosage:

  • 1–2g standardised extract (5–7% ginsenosides) or 3–9g root decoction daily

Avoid if:

  • Always consult your oncologist before adding any herb or supplement during cancer treatment — some may interact with chemotherapy, targeted therapies, or radiation.
  • May cause mild insomnia if taken late in day
  • Avoid in hypertension at high doses
