Molluscum

Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral skin infection caused by Molluscipoxvirus (MCV) — the largest poxvirus to infect humans — producing discrete, dome-shaped, flesh-coloured or pearlescent papules 1–6 mm in diameter with the characteristic central umbilication (dimple) produced by the enlarged, virus-filled cells creating a central plug that eventually extrudes. MCV is an obligate human pathogen with no animal reservoir, transmitted by direct skin-to-skin contact (autoinoculation from scratching spreads lesions), shared towels and bathing equipment (water softens the stratum corneum and lowers the inoculation threshold), and in adolescents by sexual contact. The virus infects and replicates within keratinocytes; its remarkable immune evasion strategy — encoding homologues of human immune regulatory proteins (MC159 and MC160 inhibit apoptosis; the virus also produces IL-18 binding protein and CC-chemokine inhibitors) — allows it to avoid immune clearance for months. MCV establishes no systemic viraemia and no latent reservoir; lesions are entirely local. In immunocompetent children, molluscum is self-limiting: lesions typically persist 6–18 months before spontaneous immune resolution. However, in children with atopic eczema — where skin barrier disruption and impaired innate immune responses in the epidermis (reduced beta-defensin production) create a permissive environment — widespread molluscum involving hundreds of lesions can develop. Holistic treatment options: benign neglect (self-resolution); apple cider vinegar topical application (acid-mediated disruption of the cornified lesion plug triggers immune recognition); tea tree oil (topical antiviral terpene activity); elderberry extract (topical and oral antiviral); and thuja tincture (traditional viricidal application used by herbalists for viral skin infections).

Echinacea stimulates the immune system and may counteract immunosuppressant medications used after organ transplants or for autoimmune conditions (corticosteroids, cyclosporine, methotrexate). Not recommended for autoimmune diseases without specialist supervision.

Thuja occidentalis (topical)

Thuja occidentalis

The most traditionally used topical herb for molluscum contagiosum — thuja's thujone and polysaccharides have direct antiviral activity against Molluscipoxvirus and are used both topically and (in homeopathic tradition) orally.

Preparation:

  • Thuja tincture (diluted): dilute 1 part tincture in 10 parts carrier oil (coconut oil).
  • Apply to each molluscum lesion only using a cotton swab.
  • Allow to dry.
  • Do NOT apply to surrounding skin.

Dosage:

  • Apply diluted thuja oil to lesions once daily.
  • Be precise — apply only to the lesion head.
  • Do not cover with bandage.
  • Continue for 4–8 weeks.

Avoid if:

  • Do NOT use undiluted thuja oil — skin irritant and potentially toxic
  • Never ingest thuja oil
  • If skin becomes very irritated — reduce frequency

Tea Tree Oil (diluted topical)

Melaleuca alternifolia

Diluted tea tree oil applied to molluscum lesions has antiviral and immune-activating topical activity — creates a local inflammatory response that accelerates immune recognition.

Preparation:

  • Dilute 1–2 drops tea tree EO in 10 ml coconut oil (1–2% dilution).
  • Apply precisely to each lesion using a cotton swab.
  • Twice daily.

Dosage:

  • 1–2% dilution applied to lesions only, twice daily.
  • Continue for 4–8 weeks minimum.

Avoid if:

  • Must be diluted — 1–2% maximum
  • Apply only to lesions — surrounding skin sensitisation possible with repeated application
  • Not for infants under 2 years

Australian Aboriginal / Modern

Elderberry Syrup (systemic immune activation)

Sambucus nigra

Molluscum contagiosum resolves spontaneously when the immune system finally 'sees' the virus — systemic immune support accelerates this recognition timeline.

Preparation:

  • Elderberry syrup daily.
  • Combine with echinacea to accelerate natural resolution.

Dosage:

  • Daily elderberry dose throughout the molluscum period.

Avoid if:

  • Raw elderberries toxic
  • No honey under 12 months

European Herbalism

Zinc (immune recognition for viral clearance)

Zinc deficiency impairs the NK cell function required for molluscum clearance — the virus persists because NK cells fail to recognise poxvirus-infected keratinocytes without adequate zinc.

Preparation:

  • Daily zinc: eggs, pumpkin seeds, red meat, lentils.
  • Or zinc gluconate supplement: 10–15 mg daily for children.

Dosage:

  • Consistent daily zinc throughout the molluscum period (which can last months to years without treatment).

Modern Immunology / Nutritional Medicine

Vitamin A (skin immune defence)

Vitamin A is the primary fat-soluble vitamin for skin mucosal immune defence — adequate vitamin A allows keratinocytes to present viral antigens correctly to immune cells.

Preparation:

  • Sweet potato (most beta-carotene per serving), carrot, leafy greens, eggs.
  • Or vitamin A supplement: 1,000–2,000 IU retinol (from animal sources) for children.

Dosage:

  • Vitamin A-rich food daily throughout molluscum period.

Molluscum Contagiosum Natural Resolution Protocol

Western Integrative / Herbal

  • Molluscum contagiosum (poxvirus skin infection) is benign and self-limiting — it resolves when the immune system finally recognises the virus, typically within 6–18 months.
  • Natural treatment aims to accelerate this immune recognition through topical irritants (thuja, tea tree) that trigger local immune response, combined with systemic immune support (zinc, vitamin A, elderberry).

Foods:

  • Topical: diluted thuja oil on lesions once daily (precise application only)
  • Topical: diluted tea tree oil on lesions twice daily
  • Systemic: elderberry syrup daily
  • Systemic: zinc 10–15 mg daily (eggs, pumpkin seeds, red meat)
  • Systemic: vitamin A foods daily (sweet potato, carrot, eggs)
  • Systemic: immune tonic tea daily
  • Avoid: spreading by scratch — keep nails short, no picking, no sharing towels

Timing:

  • Morning topical routine: Apply diluted thuja oil to each lesion (cotton swab, precise) → allow to dry → no bandage
  • Evening topical routine: Apply diluted tea tree oil to each lesion → allow to dry
  • Daily nutrition: Carrot-sweet potato-elderberry juice + eggs with breakfast + pumpkin seeds as snack — zinc, vitamin A, and antiviral support throughout the day

  • Strain.
  • Elderberry syrup added after steeping.
  • Honey for 1y+.

Thuja & Elderberry Immune Glycerite (oral)

Thuja occidentalis / Sambucus nigra

Combined oral glycerite to support systemic antiviral immune response alongside topical treatment — accelerates natural molluscum resolution.
