Feline Arthritis
Turmeric (low dose), omega-3 & glucosamine for cat-safe joint inflammation relief
Safety notice β LOW
Sunaras provides educational wellness content only. This is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Individual responses to herbs vary. Always consult a qualified healthcare practitioner for personalised guidance.
Boswellia (very low dose β cats)
Boswellia has the most evidence for anti-inflammatory joint support in felines, with a safety profile more appropriate for cats than many other herbal anti-inflammatories. AKBA inhibits 5-LOX, reducing leukotriene production in arthritic joints. Cats require significantly lower doses than dogs due to reduced hepatic glucuronidation capacity.
β οΈ Cats: use at very low doses only and ideally under veterinary supervision. Cats lack the full complement of hepatic CYP enzymes and glucuronosyltransferases that metabolise many compounds. Do not extrapolate dog doses. Monitor for any GI upset or changes in behaviour.
Green-Lipped Mussel (Perna canaliculus)
Green-lipped mussel provides unique ETA omega-3 fatty acids plus native chondroitin and glucosamine in a form safe for cats. Unlike turmeric or many anti-inflammatory herbs that pose metabolic risks for cats, GLP mussel is a whole food concentrate with an excellent feline safety profile.
β οΈ Shellfish-source product β avoid in cats with confirmed shellfish sensitivity. Start at lower end of dose range. Safe for long-term use in most cats.
Omega-3 Fish Oil (EPA/DHA β cat-appropriate)
EPA and DHA from fish oil directly reduce synovial prostaglandin and leukotriene production in arthritic cat joints. Fish oil is one of the safest and most consistently effective natural supplements for feline arthritis β cats cannot synthesise EPA/DHA from ALA (unlike some other species) making direct supplementation especially important.
β οΈ Use within 3 months of opening. Refrigerate after opening. Rancid fish oil is harmful. Salmon oil (commonly used for cats) is appropriate if from a reputable source. Do not use cod liver oil in high doses (vitamin A toxicity risk in cats).
