Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent joint disease globally, characterised by progressive degeneration of articular cartilage — the smooth, shock-absorbing tissue covering the ends of bones within joints — leading to pain, stiffness, reduced range of motion, and joint dysfunction. OA is not simply 'wear and tear' but an active, dynamic disease involving the entire joint organ: cartilage, subchondral bone, synovial membrane, periarticular muscles, and ligaments all participate in pathological remodelling. The process begins with loss of proteoglycan content from the cartilage matrix — reducing its water-binding capacity and compressive resilience — followed by collagen network disruption, chondrocyte death, and surface fibrillation. As cartilage thins, subchondral bone is exposed to increased mechanical load, stimulating reactive bone formation (osteophytes — 'bone spurs') and subchondral sclerosis. A powerful warming balm combining arnica's bruise and muscle healing properties with capsaicin from cayenne to create a counter-irritant effect that blocks pain signals and improves circulation to inflamed joints.
How to make:
- Gently warm the arnica oil in a double boiler — do not overheat.
- Add cayenne powder and stir thoroughly. Simmer on lowest heat for 20 min.
- Strain cayenne through cheesecloth to remove particles (for a smoother balm).
- Return infused oil to double boiler and melt beeswax into it until combined.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool to 45°C.
- Add all essential oils and stir well.
- Pour into small tins or push-up tubes and allow to set.
Apply: Apply a pea-sized amount to affected joints or muscles. Massage in using firm circular motions for 2–3 minutes. Wash hands thoroughly after use. — 2–4 times daily as needed for pain

How to make:
- Gently warm sesame oil in a small saucepan on lowest heat.
- Add turmeric and ginger powders and stir continuously for 10 minutes.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.
- Strain through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a glass bottle.
- Add all essential oils and shake well to combine.
- Store in a dark glass bottle with a dropper cap.
