Small Animal Immune Support
Echinacea, elderberry & astragalus for rabbits, guinea pigs and small pets
Safety notice β HIGH
Sunaras provides educational wellness content only. This is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Individual responses to herbs vary. Always consult a qualified healthcare practitioner for personalised guidance.
Echinacea stimulates the immune system and may counteract immunosuppressant medications used after organ transplants or for autoimmune conditions (corticosteroids, cyclosporine, methotrexate). Not recommended for autoimmune diseases without specialist supervision.
Echinacea (Very Low Dose β Short Courses)
Echinacea's polysaccharides and alkylamides stimulate innate immune cell activity β macrophage phagocytosis, NK cell activity, and interferon production. For small animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils), extremely low doses of alcohol-free echinacea glycerite provide immune support during illness or after stress without the overstimulation risks of higher doses.
β οΈ Short courses only (maximum 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off). Not for animals with autoimmune conditions. Alcohol-based echinacea tinctures are toxic to small animals β glycerite ONLY. Consult an exotic animal vet for dosing in unusual species.
Elderberry (Sambucus nigra β Immune Support)
Elderberry anthocyanins and sambucol lectins enhance NK cell activity and interferon production, providing antiviral and immune-stimulating properties. For small animals, a very dilute preparation can support immune function during URI episodes or post-stress immune recovery.
β οΈ Use only pure elderberry without any added sweeteners β xylitol and some sugar alcohols are toxic to small animals. Raw elderberries are toxic (contain sambunigrin) β use cooked/processed preparation only. Consult exotic vet for specific species dosing.
Astragalus (Tonic Immune Support β Small Animals)
Astragalus polysaccharides provide gentle immune-tonic support appropriate for small animals in very small quantities β supporting the innate immune system without overstimulation. Well-tolerated in small amounts by herbivorous small animals.
β οΈ Amounts for small animals are very small β err on the side of less. Exotic/small animal veterinary guidance is recommended before supplementing small animal companions.
