Lemon Balm
Melissa officinalis
The primary calming herb for childhood anxiety — gentle, pleasant-tasting, safe from toddlerhood, and with clinical evidence in children for reducing anxiety, hyperactivity, and sleep difficulty.
Preparation:
- Tea: steep 1–2 tsp fresh or 1 tsp dried lemon balm in 250 ml boiled water for 5 min covered.
- Or glycerite drops in juice.
- For an anxious child: offer warm lemon balm tea after school or before stressful events.
Dosage:
- Children (2–5y): 60–90 ml tea or 1 ml glycerite, 1–2× daily.
- Children (6–12y): 120–180 ml tea or 2 ml glycerite, 2× daily.
- Teens: 300 mg extract or 240 ml tea, 2–3× daily.
Avoid if:
- Do not use with thyroid medications or conditions
- High doses theoretically suppress thyroid — stay within recommended paediatric doses
Chamomile
Matricaria chamomilla
The most gentle, universally accepted anxiolytic herb for children — used in virtually every world culture for childhood nervousness, nighttime fears, and separation anxiety. Safe from infancy when diluted.
Preparation:
- Steep 1–2 tsp dried flowers in 250 ml boiled water for 5–8 min, covered.
- Strain.
- Sweeten with honey (1y+).
- Serve warm in the evening, or at any point of heightened anxiety.
Dosage:
- Infants (4m+, with guidance): 10–20 ml dilute.
- Children (1–12y): 60–180 ml, 1–3× daily as needed.
- Teens: 240 ml, 2–3× daily.
Avoid if:
- Asteraceae family allergy — rare
- Not for known plant allergies without testing
Passionflower
Passiflora incarnata
Most effective for older children (5y+) with separation anxiety, school anxiety, and nighttime anxiety — acts on GABA pathways to reduce the racing thoughts and physical tension of childhood anxiety.
Preparation:
- Glycerite for children.
- Capsule for teens.
- Can be used as a tea (steep 1–2 tsp in 250 ml water, 8 min) for children who accept it.
Dosage:
- Children (5–12y): 1–2 ml glycerite, 1–2× daily (afternoon and evening).
- Teens: 2 ml glycerite or 200 mg extract, 2–3× daily.
Avoid if:
- Not for under 5 years
- Not combined with prescription anxiolytics without medical supervision

- Pleasant taste — most children accept it readily.
- Or as glycerite drops.
